Shortts Lake

There are many stories and memories about Shortts Lake, where it all began in many respects. Saturday & Sunday afternoons resembled a community fair at the Courtneys, perhaps 20-30 on a slow day. Joanne was in charge of organizing the order of waterskiing, etc (no surprises there!!) and there was plenty of Olands close by to quench the thirst of the boat drivers, Uncle Don and Dad (Tommy Walsh) when they were afforded a break or two. On occasional weekends, Don and Tom’s feet were more ever-present than their faces… which were under the boat desperately piecing (duct tape) together parts of the ghetto boat under the watchful eyes of many young waterskiers. Uncle Don was front and center of it all, and the very reason it all began. Family & friends, young and old, sharing many laughs. But there was a dark side… it was never a good thing to be near the water on your birthday and sleeping in was certain to result in a rude wakeup… shaken out of your sleeping bag into the cold lake..… and no one ever completed “99 bottles of beer on the wall” while staying completely dry. I believe Chris and (sister) Anne made it close to 90. But 91-99 were sung from the lake. The summer days seemed to last forever, and often preceded late night camp fires and sing alongs. Aunt Ethel was the star, and Uncle Don would tear up in pride as she sang. (one verse) Tommy always managed to get in bits and pieces of the Mountains of Mourne…. (And a few other naughty songs). Of course the nights could never end, as Uncle Don proclaimed “Let’s push her through”. Indeed we did, and will always “push her through” in your honor. We’d love to see visitors at Shortts Lake to relive these memories. Boat tours are free – rum is optional, but highly recommended. Cheers Uncle Don!! Jim Walsh Shortts Lake
